Looking back on ‘Season One’ of Pretzel Day

We just wrapped up our last Pretzel Day for 2023—think of that as Season One—and we hope you loved the new monthly tradition as much as we did! Pretzel Day, for those who are unfamiliar, is our version of “show & tell” but with snacks! Each month two different members from across the whole Gravitate community share a unique interest and/or passion with the rest of us over the lunch hour. It’s a moment for all of us to step away from the laptop and connect with each other. I mean, that’s a big reason we choose to cowork together, right? Bonus: the Gravitate team brings the pretzels.

Season Two of Pretzel Day will kick off in mid-January, so if you have an interest, passion, or an area of expertise that you’d like to share, please tell your Community Manager and we’ll get you on the schedule. As you’ll see below, pretty much any topic (other than what you do for your “day job”) is fair game!

Thanks to all of our members who stepped up to share this year:

Jeremy & Baseball Hats

Jeremy showed off his extensive baseball hat collection and explained the history behind them as well as the myriad types, styles, and functions they have.

Mitch & Open Source Information

Mitch shocked us (in a good way) with his tales about Open Source Information: the cool and sometimes scary side of the internet. So go change all your passwords NOW!

Allison & Rock Climbing

Allison shared her sporty hobby of rock climbing and the many types and techniques she uses. We were impressed to say the least!

Mitch & Letterlocking

Mitch returned with some ancient spy-level stuff: letterlocking, which is the historical method of folding and securing paper without an envelope. Who knew sealing letters could be so complex?

Emily & OneWheel

Emily's love for OneWheel made us want to ditch cars and bikes. Sometimes described as an electric skateboard, OneWheel is a self-balancing, single-wheel recreational personal transporter. She has been practicing the sport for over four years!

Brian & County Courthouses

Between 2008 and 2011, Brian visited every county and photographed every courthouse in Iowa. He explained why they exist, the services provided and the variance between counties. He also let us in on his personal aesthetic rankings from prettiest to ugliest - we were obsessed!

Jimmy & Vintage Cameras

Jimmy showed off his vintage camera collection and let us hold them to get a better look! It was like stepping into a time machine.

Lauren & Alternative Lawns

Lauren got us rethinking our yards with her talk on alternative lawns. She has successfully cultivated a full clover lawn so we think she’s an expert! And by the end of it, grass felt way too basic.

Danny & Cannabis

Danny talked openly and answered all our questions about cannabis. He touched on the different uses, the science behind it, various state policies, and the industrial potential - the whole deal. Might be one of the most in-depth presentations we’ve had!

Jenica & Barbie

Wrapping it up, Jenica celebrated Barbie's evolution. She showed off her collection, told us her opinion on the Barbie movie, and even brought her dog all dressed up in pink. She really went all out!
